There are many campground/cabins and backpacker options.... but also many 5 Star resorts, and everything in between. Similarly if choosing to stay / explore the islands for a few days whilst in the Whitsundays, these range from camping on National Park Islands (eg Northmole Is), more affordable Long Island, mid ranged Daydream Island and Southmole Island, the ever popular Hamilton Island (which has an airport and you can fly to or from directly) to the exclusive Hayman Island. Getting a group together and chartering a small self-sail boat for a number of days is also a popular option.
I have stayed at three of the camp grounds, and they have all been fine. As part of a school trip we stayed in cabins in the Island Gateway Holiday Park which was probably the pick (and my students enjoyed the LONGEST SHOWER EVER there after coming off four days kayaking the Whitsundays and fighting 25 knot winds to get home... :-). If you are looking at making this a longer trip, possibly with children, just be aware that the accommodation often promoted as "Arlie Beach" stretches from Cannonvale to Shute Harbour (approximately 6km). Some properties and resorts have fantastic views, but can be located high on a ridge or in a tropical surrounds some distance from the township. A shuttle bus will be provided on the day of our wedding to pick up guests from "central pick up points" and return you to "various accommodation houses at the end of the night" - or to Mamma Africa...

Coral Sea Resort
Positioned on the absolute oceanfront and just a short stroll via the seaside boardwalk to Airlie Beach, lies the Coral Sea Resort. The resort has recently undergone a soft renovation with all furnishings being updated to a more modern style.

Summit Apartments
Set in the peaceful rainforest, Airlie Beach Summit Apartments are a 15 minute walk from Airlie Beach town centre. These contemporary apartments have laundry facilities, a fully equipped kitchen with a dishwasher and microwave and a spacious living area with satellite TV and a DVD player. Due to the location of this property, road transport to and from the accommodation is highly recommended. The taxi service in Airlie Beach is very reliable and quick.

BIG 4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort
Unique to Airlie Beach, this resort is set on 26 acres of landscaped grounds offering a combination of wide open spaces, stunning tropical gardens and accommodation that spans camping and caravanning through to luxury cabins. The property is located in Cannonvale, the adjacent township to Airlie Beach and a bus stop is located directly at the front of the property for ease of access to Airlie Beach.

Colonial Palms Motor Inn 
Best Western Colonial Palms Motor Inn offers standard hotel rooms, 1 bedroom apartments and poolside suites. Accommodation is basic and provides views to Boathaven Bay. The property is located on the main road and is an easy ten minute stroll into Airlie Beach town. Other facilities include a swimming pool, spa and children’s wading pool.
